Ayurveda Bati Or VatiAyurveda Bati Or Vati - Pills And Tablets Of Ayurvedic MedicineAyurveda bati or ayurvedic vati or vatakam are the words used for pills or tablets in ayurvedic medicine. Read more about how ayurvedic vati has replaced the earlier herbal formulations like powders and decoctions, their preparation method, the binding agent, the size and shape and finally the plus and minus points of using pills. The Historical Aspect Of Ayurveda Bati:In ayurvedic medicine, there had been five basic or primary pharmaceutical preparations of ayurvedic herbal remedies. These preparations are considered as the most basic formulations as they are required in all the advanced forms of preparations of herbal remedies.
After these five basic preparations had been in use for long periods, there arise the need for some other more convenient preparation for taking remedies. So gradually various types of ayurveda bati were developed. How Ayurveda Bati Are Prepared?By definition, ayurveda bati are those preparations that are based on paste or powder. The powder or paste of herbs is mixed with water or milk or honey or gum or guggulu or jagger or sugar syrup as a binding agent. This mixture is pounded in mortar and pestle so that we get a homogeneous mixture. Then we can make tablets or pills either by hand or semi-automatic or automatic tablet making machine. Size And Shape Of Ayurvedic Vati:Previously the size of tablet or bati was set according to size of various grains like gram, rice, mustard seed or some beans. Nowadays by using modern machines, we get astounding rate of production as well as full uniformity in size and shape. Earlier the shape and size of tablets varies greatly. The tablets might range from 32 mg to 10-20 gm in weight. Now we have tablets of hardly 750-1000 mg in weight. Points To Remember While Preparing Ayurvedic Pills:Binding Agent Of Ayurveda Bati:Several natural substances are used as binding agents like honey, sugar syrup, guggul, resinous gums and starch. There is some suggestion regarding the proportion of binding agent in ayurvedic medicine so that we can have standardized ayurvedic pills. Sugar should be four times of herbal powder, jaggery should be twice that of powder, guggul should be in equal quantity. These parameters had been used in older times. Now we can have appropriate binding agent and the proportion could be as little as 10-25% of herbal powders. Quality Of Powder Or Paste In Ayurvedic Pills:The quality of tablets depends on the quality of powder - the finer the powder, the better tablets we have. Fine powder or paste are also essential as they render the dissolution time of tablets in stomach to go down. Tablets dissolve earlier in stomach and intestine and the onset of action is rapid. Fine particle size in powder or paste enhances the bioavailability of ayurvedic pills. Enhanced bioavailability makes the active ingredients of herbal remedies to reach faster in blood stream and tissues. Coating Of Ayurvedic Vati:After preparing ayurvedic pills, they are dried in dry and airy room or sometimes in sunlight. Then, the coating was done by rotating tablets in a pan containing natural dye. Pros Of Ayurveda Bati:
