Basic Principles Of Ayurveda - Tripod Of Life And 9 Primary
Matter In Ayurveda
Longevity chapter describes the tripod of life in ayurvedic medicine along with nine different matter in Ayurvedic medicine.
The tripod of life further points toward the third dimension of
body-mind medicine in the form of Consciousness that we are
neglecting almost always.
"Soul, mind and body are the three legs
of the tripod of life. Whatever is there in living body is get
supported by these three limbs."
"The soul is the consciousness principle
in body. It is our soul that is specifically targeted by Ayurveda
because soul or conscious principle is the chief support of life."
(Charaka Samhita, Sutra Section, Ch.
1/46-47, Longevity)
Dr Vikrama's Commentary: Every stream of Science has some
'Pure Science' and 'Applied Science' part. What is initially thought
to be in the realm of pure science is later applied as more
information is is acquired.
After several false starts, Watson and Crick put forward a three
dimensional model of DNA's double helical structure with proper
angles and size of molecules. Right then, this research was a part
of pure science and now we are successfully working with Genetic
Recombination Engineering and Cloning. Several other major research
in this field might change the present outlook and scenario in the
future.
Ayurveda is for life - for better and greater health and to
manage disorders. Our life rests on the three limbs - body, mind and
soul. Together they are the supports or limbs of the tripod of life.
We see it clearly that without body there is no life. And without
mind or functioning brain and nervous system, there is no life even.
Without the conscious principle, these two are good for nothing. So
Soul or Consciousness is the chief support of life.
All the efforts of modern science and researchers are in the
field of gross body and its microscopic and molecular parts. No
solid effort is being made in the deeper and more powerful field of
Prana or life force and Consciousness.
Perhaps when we would someday realize in future that the key to
matter and life is more subtle and deeper than atoms and DNA, then
we might see the great effort in this direction. And different tools
and mindset
are needed for different science - measuring temperature needs
thermometer and measuring pH needs litmus paper. But for working
with these subtler parts what we would need is right inside
us. The first and foremost necessity will be an appropriate paradigm
or state of mind.
Then we will be able to perceive truly the great hidden power of
Ayurveda and its principles. Does it look like a science fantasy?
"Five elements - earth, water, fire, air
and ether principles; soul, mind, time and direction are the nine
matter. The substances with manifest consciousness are living and
the substances with unmanifested consciousness are non-living."
(Charaka Samhita, Sutra Section, Ch.
1/48, Longevity)
Dr Vikrama's Commentary: Among the six substances, matter
is only one. Matter is further subdivided into nine categories.
Five elements don't represent the gross elements like fire
that we see. These
elements represent a finer energy level that can correspond roughly
to Prana or life energy vibration. Prana vibrational energy is finer
than subatomic particles like proton, electron and neutron.
The concept of Prana or life energy might be new to Physics. But
it had been in practice in Ayurvedic medicine and Yoga practice for
at least several thousands of year.
What we consider miracle or healing is exactly an underlying
Science whose understanding will gradually be uncovered when its time will come.
Healing or cure through Yoga, Acupressure, Acupuncture, Reiki and
other tools of energy medicine are exerted via Prana or life energy
vibrations.
After genetics in medicine and sub-atomic particles and
electro-magnetic radiation in Quantum Physics, this new development
in conventional Science would be the premier development of the new
age. We are dealing with energy on a more physical level - mobiles, bluetooth, MRI, satellites, electro-magnetic radiation spectrum.
Time will come, perhaps in near future, when Science will delve a
little deeper and these concepts of life energy will be familiar to
us like we are familiar to cellphones and other high tech gadgets.
These five elemental principles belong to that plane. They should
not be understood equal to their gross representation alone as it is
usually written about.
As every moderately educated person knows that the building
blocks of matter is atom or molecule and Atoms and molecules consist
of three chief subatomic particles - proton, electron and neutron.
All the diversity of this universe is laid down by the
arrangement of these three subatomic particles. The only difference
is in number and their arrangement. And now we are able to invent a
new element and can add a few to already 100+ elements of Chemistry.
The five elemental principle of matter do represent a finer than
subatomic particle level. Previously some persons might doubted this
concept but now they understand it. When all the universe is to be
formed by three chief subatomic particles, then what could be the
problem with five elements according to Vedic Science!
Still, we leave this issue to be resolved by time, the mighty
lord, that has swayed the histories and civilization with its slight
movement. 100 or 200 years back we were without any pride-to-have
development in all fields - medicine, weapons and science. Perhaps
in next few hundred years, the present development might be
considered too basic or physical or gross!
Previous to Einstein, the world was thought to be three dimensional
space.
One above and below, one to right and left, and one to front and
back. Thereafter the fourth dimension of existence came along in the
form of time.
There is no absolute other than Photon or energy particle of
light. It is all relative to its position in Space and time.
Yoga and Ayurveda advance this theory and say that there is no
other absolute than Consciousness principle. And as
science-believing-guys we need to wait a long with this transition
to be comfortable with.
Between Consciousness and matter, there are several other matter
like - direction or
relativity of space, prana, mind or bound consciousness or bundled
consciousness or thoughts and only then we can comprehend the
pristine prince of universe - The Consciousness, The Child of
Christianity.
According to Vedic Science, there is mention of four era of
development of human psyche that are cyclical in nature - once going upward and then
coming downward like a sine wave.
The first of this era Kaliyuga is considered dark age. The next, Dwapar is opens the portal for
understanding and use of life energy
or prana. The third, Treta opens the gate for the understanding of
mind or bundled consciousness. Next, Satya era is associated with
the comprehension of consciousness principle. These generalizations
are in regard with the common or average person's understanding or
comprehension of a particular age.
Suggested readings for this part is:
- Autobiography Of A Yogi By Shri Shri Paramhansa Yogananda,
published by Self Realization Fellowship. The particular chapter
of Paramhansa Yoganandaji's meeting with Sir J.C. Bose and The
Science Of Miracles will help especially. Anyone who have read
this book will assert that this would be going to be one of the
most impressing books.
